Helambu, about 75 kms north of Kathmandu is an area inhabited by Sherpas and Tamang. The Helambu region can be incorporated into the Langtang trek, either via Gosainkund or across the 5106 meters Ganja La. In winter, both of the high routes from Langtang are usually snow covered and dangerous, which makes it difficult or impossible at these times. The Helambu trek is popular because it is short trek, easily accessible from Kathmandu, at relatively low altitudes (below 3500 m) making it feasible throughout the winter. The language, culture and dress of the Helambu Sherpas are very different from the Solu Khumbu Sherpas which makes the region interesting from a cultural point of view as well.
